OLONGAPO CITY — Stories of resilience, leadership, and purpose took center stage on June 27, 2026, as JCI Olongapo, led by President Barbi Gonzaga, hosted another edition of Liveraries Detours at 580 Coffee Shop along Magsaysay Drive.

Founded by Jason Gavina in 2019, the award-winning storytelling platform encourages ordinary individuals to share life-changing experiences while promoting literacy through book donations to public schools and community libraries.

“We realized that many people have inspiring stories that deserve to be heard,” Gavina said. “Stories help people understand one another.”

Among the featured speakers was Mia Casal, a ceramic artist from San Narciso, Zambales, who recounted how losing her job led her to pursue pottery full-time. What began as a creative outlet eventually became a source of healing as she coped with panic disorder and later inspired her to mentor aspiring artists in her community.

“When you are called to do something,” Casal said, “life keeps bringing you back to it.”

Former journalist and political consultant Ruffie Neil Cruz also shared his journey from covering crime and controversy to documenting stories of hope through his nationwide cycling advocacy, Bisikleta Pilipinas. Through his travels, he organized outreach programs, supported Indigenous communities, and found renewed purpose in telling stories that uplift and inspire.

Leadership likewise emerged as a central theme during the event.

Drew Botulan, president of JCI Pangasinan, spoke about overcoming humble beginnings and building his leadership journey through dedication and service despite lacking influential connections.

Former JCI Olongapo President Oscar Ambrajano Jr. echoed the message, saying that joining JCI at a young age transformed his life and taught him that genuine leadership begins with a willingness to serve.

In his closing remarks, Gavina encouraged participants to recognize the value of their own experiences and the impact their stories can have on others.

Hosted by JCI Olongapo, Liveraries Detours once again highlighted how authentic storytelling can inspire leadership, promote literacy, and strengthen communities—one conversation, one book, and one story at a time. (PR)
