SUBIC BAY FREEPORT — The Philippine Navy formally welcomed its newest offshore patrol vessel, the future BRP Rajah Lakandula (PS21), during an arrival ceremony held on May 8 at Naval Operating Base-Subic.
The ceremony was led by Philippine Military Academy Superintendent Vice Admiral Caesar Bernard N. Valencia as keynote speaker. Also in attendance were Flag Officer In Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Q. Ezpeleta and Philippine Fleet Commander Rear Admiral Joe Anthony C. Orbe.
The vessel, designated as Offshore Patrol Vessel 2 (OPV 2), was built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and arrived in the Philippines on May 4. It is scheduled to be formally commissioned into service at a later date.
In his speech, Valencia said the ship symbolizes the country’s commitment to protecting its maritime territory while maintaining peaceful relations with other nations.
“When this ship sails, the spirit of Rajah Lakandula sails with it — steadfast, wise, and unyielding,” he said, referring to the pre-colonial ruler of Tondo who is known for his leadership and courage.
The addition of BRP Rajah Lakandula is part of the Philippine Navy’s modernization program aimed at enhancing maritime security and strengthening the country’s naval capabilities.
