MARIVELES, Bataan — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) deployed containment equipment after an estimated 25 liters of used oil contaminated about 500 square meters of coastal waters in Sitio Naswe, Barangay Ipag, on November 5.

The PCG received a report of a suspected oil spill at around 9:30 a.m. Initial findings indicated that the substance may have come from washing activities, although its source remains under investigation.

In coordination with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, the PCG deployed seven absorbent booms and 2,200 absorbent pads to contain the spill and support cleanup operations.

At around 3:30 p.m., PCG personnel, together with representatives from the Mariveles Municipal Agriculture Office and Barangay Ipag, installed containment booms along the affected shoreline to prevent the oil from spreading.

By 6:30 p.m., the response team had collected about 800 kilograms of oil-contaminated debris and used absorbent materials, which were placed in 40 sacks for temporary storage at a secure location.

Cleanup operations were scheduled to resume on November 6 as the PCG continued to assess the affected coastal area and coordinate with local authorities to mitigate the environmental impact.
