MANILA — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) welcomed Tuesday’s court ruling finding two men guilty of the 2019 killing of journalist Eduardo “Ed” Dizon.
The Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 228 found Junell Jane Andagkit Poten, identified as the alleged gunman, and Dante Encarnacion Tabusares, identified as the alleged mastermind, guilty of murder, according to the PTFOMS. Both were sentenced to reclusion perpetua.
Dizon, a broadcaster for Brigada News FM, was shot dead on July 10, 2019, in Kidapawan City while driving home after his radio program. The PTFOMS said his reporting had included criticism of local corruption.
In a statement, PTFOMS Executive Director Undersecretary Jose Torres Jr. described the ruling as a milestone in the pursuit of justice for Dizon’s family and in efforts to address attacks against journalists.
Torres thanked the prosecutors, investigators and agencies involved in the case, including the Department of Justice, Philippine National Police and National Bureau of Investigation. He also recognized the witnesses who testified in the case and stressed the importance of their continued protection.
The PTFOMS said the case underscored the need for sustained investigations, prosecution, witness protection and coordination among government agencies, while respecting judicial independence and due process.
The task force said it would continue monitoring developments in the case and coordinating with relevant authorities. It also said it would continue working on other unresolved cases involving attacks against journalists and media workers.
“Every family seeking justice deserves sustained attention and dedicated action,” Torres said.
