PTFOMS Condemns Killing of Radio Broadcaster in BARMM

The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has condemned the killing of radio broadcaster Nestor “Teting” Micator in Malidegao town, Special Geographic Area of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on the evening of May 21.

Based on initial police reports, Micator, a news anchor and commentator of D’Empire Radio in Pikit, Cotabato, was shot by an unidentified assailant while about to board his motorcycle outside the barangay hall of Barangay Fort Pikit. The incident reportedly happened in the presence of his wife.

Authorities said the suspect fled the scene with an accomplice following the attack.

In a statement, PTFOMS strongly condemned the killing and extended its condolences to the broadcaster’s family, friends, colleagues, and listeners.

Investigators are currently determining the motive behind the attack, including whether it was connected to Micator’s work as a broadcaster or his role as a member of the Lupong Pambarangay.

PTFOMS urged authorities to pursue all possible angles in the investigation and ensure the immediate identification and arrest of those responsible.

“The killing of any media practitioner is a matter of serious concern. Acts of violence against journalists undermine not only press freedom, but also the public’s right to information and the democratic space where issues affecting communities are discussed openly,” the task force said.

The agency said it is closely coordinating with the Philippine National Police and other concerned agencies regarding the progress of the investigation.

PTFOMS also called on local authorities and residents to cooperate in efforts to identify the perpetrators and establish accountability.

The task force reiterated its commitment to uphold the safety and security of media workers across the country and to strengthen mechanisms protecting journalists from threats, harassment, and violence.
