PTFOMS Raises Concern Over Broadcaster’s Remarks Trivializing Rape and Violence Against Women

MANILA — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) has expressed grave concern over remarks made by a radio broadcaster in Bacolod City that allegedly trivialized rape and violence against women.

In a statement, PTFOMS said the broadcaster’s jokes and comments were inappropriate and deeply disturbing, stressing that such statements have no place in responsible journalism and broadcasting.

The task force emphasized that while freedom of expression and press freedom are fundamental in a democratic society, media practitioners have the responsibility to uphold professionalism, decency, and respect for human dignity.

“Media platforms must never be used to normalize violence, demean victims, or perpetuate harmful narratives disguised as humor,” PTFOMS said.

The agency noted that comments making light of rape and sexual violence undermine efforts to protect women, promote gender sensitivity, and create safe spaces in both media and society.

PTFOMS acknowledged the public apology issued by the broadcaster but said the incident should serve as a reminder to all media practitioners, broadcasters, and content creators about the impact of words spoken on public platforms.

The task force also called on media organizations, broadcasters’ associations, and regulatory agencies to strengthen ethical standards, gender sensitivity training, and accountability mechanisms within the industry.

PTFOMS reiterated its commitment to supporting a free, responsible, and ethical media environment where press freedom is exercised with accountability and respect for human rights.
