65 Firearms Voluntarily Surrendered to Police in Bataan

CAMP OLIVAS, Pampanga — A total of 65 assorted firearms were voluntarily turned over to authorities in Balanga City, Bataan on May 4, 2026, in a move that underscores growing cooperation between the community and law enforcement.

In a statement released on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, the firearms, previously owned by a private security agency, were surrendered through the initiative of the agency’s secretary and a family member of the deceased owner. They sought police assistance to ensure the proper handling and disposition of the weapons, many of which had expired registrations.

Personnel from the Bataan Police Provincial Office, in coordination with the Provincial Intelligence Unit and the Balanga City Police Station, conducted verification and inventory at a residence in Barangay Munting Batangas.

Authorities reported that the surrendered items included 31 units of 12-gauge shotguns, two caliber 5.56 rifles, two caliber .30 carbines, one caliber .45 sub-machine gun, 25 units of 9mm pistols, and four caliber .38 revolvers. Around 2,000 rounds of ammunition and several firearm magazines were also turned over.

All items were properly documented and placed under secure custody at the Balanga City Police Station. Police said the firearms will undergo further verification with the Firearms and Explosives Office, particularly due to documentation issues, including cases of identical serial numbers.

Police Brigadier General Jess B. Mendez, Regional Director of Police Regional Office 3, commended the voluntary turnover, noting that it reflects both responsibility and trust from the community.

“Such voluntary cooperation is significant. It demonstrates public trust in the police and a shared commitment to ensuring safety,” Mendez said.

He added that the development aligns with the Philippine National Police’s Focused Agenda on strengthening police operations, integrity monitoring, and public safety initiatives.

Authorities continue to encourage firearm owners to comply with existing laws and coordinate with law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that strong police-community partnerships remain essential in maintaining peace and security. (Ang Pahayagan story / JASON DE ASIS)
