MANILA — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security reaffirmed its commitment to protecting press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists as the country observed World Press Freedom Day today, May 3.

In a statement, the task force said the observance highlights the importance of safeguarding journalists’ rights and upholding freedom of expression in a democratic society.

PTFOMS welcomed the Philippines’ improved standing in the 2026 World Press Freedom Index released by Reporters Without Borders, noting that the country climbed to 114th place out of 180 nations from 116th last year. The task force said the ranking marks the country’s highest position in 21 years and reflects efforts to create an environment where journalism can thrive.

Despite the improvement, the agency acknowledged that challenges to press freedom remain and vowed to continue addressing issues affecting journalists and media organizations.

The task force also cited concerns raised over alleged “red-tagging” and the targeting of independent media outlets but expressed confidence in the country’s journalists and media groups, which it described as part of a strong civil society advocating for accountability and truth.

PTFOMS said it is working to strengthen legal protections for journalists, including efforts to address the misuse of defamation laws and prevent unfounded charges that could hinder legitimate reporting. The agency added that it also seeks to support independent media voices and uphold the rights of women journalists.

The task force likewise underscored the need to combat disinformation amid growing political polarization, saying it aims to work with media institutions to promote factual reporting and improve media literacy among the public.

“As we mark World Press Freedom Day, we remain steadfast in our mission to protect and enhance the freedom of the press,” the task force said, calling on stakeholders to help build a media environment that promotes freedom of expression, truth, and integrity.✴️
