San Marcelino studies Botolan eco-tourism model to boost sustainable tourism

ZAMBALES — The Municipal Tourism Office of San Marcelino conducted a benchmarking visit to the neighboring town of Botolan as part of efforts to strengthen its eco-tourism development and adopt sustainable tourism practices.

The delegation was led by Tourism Designate Reia G. Pabelonia and Sangguniang Bayan Member Louella Aquino, chairperson of the Committee on Tourism.

Aquino said the initiative forms part of the municipality’s broader strategy to develop a sustainable and community-centered tourism industry that promotes local destinations while ensuring environmental protection and long-term economic opportunities for residents.

The San Marcelino team was welcomed by Botolan Tourism Officer Gennessy Villar and Tourism Committee Chairperson Angel Diesta, who facilitated discussions and site visits showcasing the town’s eco-tourism management systems.

The benchmarking activity focused on best practices in visitor management, safety protocols, environmental protection, stakeholder coordination, and tourism promotion. Through technical discussions and field visits, officials from both local government units exchanged insights on improving tourism operations and governance.

Among the highlights of the visit was Botolan’s management of the Mount Pinatubo Trail, which served as a model for sustainable tourism development.

Officials said the visit provided valuable insights that could help San Marcelino improve and promote its own tourism destinations, including Mapanuepe Lake and the scenic “New Zealand of Zambales.”

The activity was supported by the Local Government Unit of San Marcelino under Mayor Elvis Ragadio Soria as part of the municipality’s push for evidence-based tourism planning and stronger collaboration with neighboring towns.
