Protest at the Podium

As Ormoc City hosts the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC), a local resident stages a solo protest against the Department of Education on April 13, 2026. Citing the Philippines’ dismal Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) results, he calls the department “incompetent” at the very moment the nation’s top student journalists have gathered in the city.

PISA is a global study that measures the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students in reading, mathematics, and science every three years. The goal is to evaluate education systems worldwide and provide insights for improvement. In the Philippines, PISA results have been a wake-up call for education reform, highlighting areas like critical thinking and problem-solving that need attention. (Photos by Alvin Hizon)
