IBA, Zambales — Authorities seized four exotic cockatiels in an entrapment operation in Iba, Zambales, targeting individuals allegedly involved in the illegal wildlife trade, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said.

The joint operation was conducted by the Philippine National Police Maritime Group in Zambales and the DENR Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) in Masinloc.

CENRO Masinloc chief Donaver Guevarra said the operation led to the confiscation of four cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus), a bird species native to Australia.

The rescued birds were placed under the custody of the DENR for proper handling and disposition in accordance with the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. Guevarra said the birds underwent an initial health assessment and were given temporary care before being transferred to an accredited wildlife rescue center for rehabilitation and long-term care.

The PNP Maritime Group is preparing to file charges against the suspects for alleged violations of Republic Act No. 9147, which prohibits the unauthorized collection, possession, transport, sale and trade of wildlife.

Under the law, violators may face imprisonment of 10 days to one month, a fine ranging from 200 pesos to 20,000 pesos, or both, depending on the offense.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Marife Castillo said the successful operation highlighted the importance of continued coordination between environmental authorities and law enforcement agencies in combating wildlife crimes.

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo said the operation demonstrated the agency’s commitment to biodiversity conservation and the strict enforcement of wildlife protection laws in Central Luzon.

Pablo also urged the public to report suspected illegal wildlife activities to the nearest DENR office or law enforcement agency, stressing that public cooperation remains essential in protecting the country’s biodiversity and curbing the illegal wildlife trade. (Ang Pahayagan Reportorial Team)
