Court Dismisses Case Against Watershed Defenders, Bishop Says

BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya — Bishop Jose Elmer I. Mangalinao of the Diocese of Bayombong announced that a court has dismissed the case filed against him and fellow watershed defenders, describing the decision as a victory for truth, justice, and environmental protection.

In a statement, Mangalinao expressed gratitude to supporters, prayer partners, environmental advocates, Indigenous peoples, church leaders, and community members who stood by them throughout the legal proceedings.

The bishop also thanked the group’s pro bono lawyers and legal team for their dedication and commitment, saying their efforts helped vindicate the cause of those advocating for the protection of watersheds and local livelihoods.

Mangalinao said the court’s decision strengthens their resolve to continue peaceful advocacy, environmental stewardship, and the protection of natural resources.

He emphasized that defending watersheds, the environment, and people’s livelihoods should not be considered a crime but a shared responsibility for present and future generations.

The bishop added that despite the legal victory, their advocacy for the protection of the watersheds of Nueva Vizcaya and Quirino will continue.

The statement was issued following the dismissal of the case against Mangalinao and other environmental defenders. (Ang Pahayagan Reportorial Team)
