TARLAC — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recorded 3,907 birds representing 48 species during a bird-watching activity at Canarem Lake Bird Sanctuary in Victoria, Tarlac, as part of the observance of World Migratory Bird Day.
The activity, conducted in partnership with the Tarlac provincial government and the municipal government of Victoria, documented 22 migratory species, 21 native species and five endemic species.
The wandering whistling-duck accounted for the largest number, with 2,693 individuals recorded. Participants also spotted 269 Philippine ducks, a vulnerable species protected under DENR Administrative Order No. 2019-09.

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo said the presence of Philippine ducks and other bird species highlights the importance of conserving Canarem Lake as a feeding, resting and sheltering area for wildlife.
He said monitoring bird populations helps guide conservation efforts, while activities such as bird-watching and tree planting encourage public participation in biodiversity protection.
As part of the event, the DENR community office in Tarlac and other participants planted 50 fruit-bearing seedlings within the lake area. The trees are expected to provide food for birds and other wildlife once they mature.

Meanwhile, Tarlac Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office head Jowell Dellosa said the DENR would continue to promote biodiversity conservation, habitat restoration and responsible environmental stewardship to protect wetland ecosystems.
World Migratory Bird Day is observed globally to raise awareness of migratory birds, their journeys and the environmental challenges they face.
This year’s theme, “Every Bird Counts,” emphasizes the importance of monitoring bird populations and conserving wetland habitats. (DENR CL PR)
