BOTOLAN, Zambales — Farmers in Botolan, Zambales are set to benefit from new farming equipment provided through a partnership between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and two mining companies to boost agricultural productivity and support sustainable community livelihoods.

DENR Zambales Provincial Head Marife Castillo said the agency, Zambales Diversified Metals Corporation (ZDMC) and Zambales Chromite Mining Company Inc. (ZCMCI) turned over farming implements and equipment to the Loob-Bunga Agro-Ecotourism Farmers Association Inc. during a ceremony in Barangay Nacolcol.

Castillo said the assistance would help farmers improve their agricultural activities, reduce the labor required for farm work, and strengthen their capacity to pursue agro-ecotourism and other community-based livelihood activities.

The turnover was formalized through a memorandum of agreement among the participating parties. Under the agreement, the farmers’ association will also be responsible for maintaining and protecting a 9-hectare bamboo plantation established under the National Greening Program within its area of responsibility.

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo said livelihood assistance could strengthen communities’ role in environmental protection.

“This is more than just a turnover of tools. It is an investment in the future of Zambales,” Pablo said, adding that aligning community initiatives with sustainable forest management could help make agro-ecotourism a long-term source of livelihood while protecting the province’s natural resources.

The initiative is part of the DENR’s continuing efforts to promote sustainable livelihood opportunities among communities involved in forest management.

Through partnerships with the private sector and local communities, the DENR aims to strengthen people’s organizations in developing productive enterprises while protecting and sustainably managing forest resources. (DENR CL PR)
