MANILA — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) has expressed concern over the reported ambush attempt against radio broadcaster Jay Lavapiez in Barangay Cagay, Roxas City on Monday morning.
In a statement, PTFoMS said the incident occurred at around 5 a.m. while Lavapiez was driving along a national highway on his way to his radio station.
Initial reports said at least two motorcycle-riding suspects blocked Lavapiez’s vehicle and opened fire. The broadcaster survived the attack. Authorities recovered four spent shell casings at the scene.
PTFoMS said the incident underscores the need to protect journalists and media workers who play a vital role in informing the public and upholding democratic institutions.
The task force, together with the Philippine National Police (PNP) Media Vanguards, has launched an investigation to identify the perpetrators and determine the motive behind the attack.
According to PTFoMS, Randulf Tuano, director of the Police Regional Office 6, has ordered police units to immediately investigate the case and give it priority attention.
The task force condemned all forms of violence and intimidation against journalists, stressing that such acts have no place in a democratic society.
PTFoMS also reiterated its commitment to protecting media practitioners and called on media organizations, civil society groups, and government agencies to work together in strengthening the safety and security of journalists.
