ZAMBALES– Fisherfolks staged a fluvial protest against World Bank’s support to coal-fired power plant that is allegedly destroying the environment in Masinloc, Zambales.
The Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ) filed a complaint against the World Bank-International Finance Corporation (WB-IFC) in 2017 for their funding and support of these coal plants.
San Miguel Global Power (SMGP), a subsidiary of the SMC, owns the Masinloc Power Plant.
In October last year, residents filed a complaint in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) opposing SMGP’s planned expansion of the Masinloc Coal Plant Units 4 and 5.
The PMCJ held a series of mobilizations demanding the WB-IFC to release the reports of their investigations in the coal-affected communities and to stop funding fossil fuels.
“As climate catastrophes impend and necessary actions to stop them remain untaken, Zambaleños continue to face multiple threats against their health, livelihood, and environment,” said PMCJ in a statement.
