Looking back & Fast Forward

On Saturday, December 7, will be a historical milestone to the City of Olongapo as it supposed to observe the 65th anniversary of the former US Naval community reservation into the official fold of the Philippines and became the last town of the province of Zambales.

Yes, dear readers, on Dec.7,l959, the birth of Olongapo as being part of the Philippine government territory begun when the US government turned over the community reservation fully to the jurisdiction of the Philippine government. It was the late Foreign Affairs Secretary Felixberto Serrano who received the documents relinquishing its hold on the reservation community.

Although the US government granted full independence to the Philippines in l945, immediately after World War 11, Olongapo, a thriving community was not included and became part of expanded US naval complex. However. Olongapo community leaders became unsatisfied and denounced alleged US military personnel’s and agitated for better leadership run by Filipinos. Under the US reservation, the base commander, held the administration, school board and key post.

At this era of social media and cell phones society, there is no activity line up by City hall to commemorate the milestone event. Even schools are not aware on the turned over of Olongapo becoming a municipality on Dec.7, 1959.

I am writing this piece by memory and again let me reiterate in his highly urbanized city of majority migrants, Olongapo was ahead of Angeles City declared a highly urbanized. City.
