PCG Commandant lauds Coast Guardians who rescued injured fishermen

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT– Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commandant, CG Admiral Ronnie Gil L Gavan, has lauded Coast Guardians on board BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) who rescued the injured fishermen in the vicinity waters off Bajo de Masinloc.

Together with Coast Guard District NCR-Central Luzon (CGDNCR-CL) Commander, CG Commodore Arnaldo Lim, CG Admiral Gavan recognized their swift response and diplomatic radio communication with Chinese vessels during an awarding ceremony held at Subic Bay Freeport in Zambales, Monday, July 1, 2024.

BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) received radio challenges, as well as encountered shadowing and initial blocking by China Coast Guard (CCG) and People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy ships. They stopped shadowing the PCG ship when they were informed by the Angel of the Sea on board about the rescue mission. The CCG also launched two rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) and offered to help the eight fishermen of Filipino Fishing Boat (FFB) Akio.

FFB Akio encountered an engine explosion at 17 nautical miles southwest of BDM on 29 June 2024. Two of their eight fishermen suffered second degree burns.

BRP Sindangan (MRRV-4407) safely arrived at the Subic Bay Freeport zone on Monday at around 4:45AM.

The Coast Guard crew turned over the injured fishermen to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) Public Health and Safety Department (PHSD) for transport to the nearest hospital for further medical assistance.
