OLONGAPO CITY –Two major private schools suspended their afternoon classes for the Elementary, Junior and Senior High students, amid the possible effects of rising temperatures brought by the El Niño phenomenon.
Rev. Fr. Raymann G. Catindig, President of St. Joseph College – Olongapo issued Memorandum No. 7, s. of 2023- 2024 which implemented the suspension of afternoon classes for the Basic Education Department starting April 03 to an indefinite date.
“As you may be aware, we have been experiencing unusually high temperatures in the past few days, resulting in the significant increase of heat index. The safety and well-being of our faculty and students are of utmost importance to us,” Catindig said
He likewise recommended that all afternoon classes to be utilized for blended mode of instruction and other alternative learning methods.

Catindig, who is also the Superintendent of the Diocese of Iba Educational Foundation Inc., which runs the Columban College here to do the same as stated in DIEFI Memorandum No. 12 s. 2024.
“Hence, we encourage faculty and students to be conscientious. Avoid strenuous activities and stay hydrated and cool during this time” Catindig added.
Some municipalities in the Visayas and some parts of Luzon have also declared suspension of afternoon classes in all levels starting April 1 due to the effect of rising temperatures.(Ang Pahayagan / JUN DUMAGUING)
