ZAMBALES — The valedictorian of the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) Class of 2023 called on his batchmates to dream big, overcome failures, and create a brighter future for all.
 
Midshipman First Class Allan Jay Basbas Jumamoy from Tagbilaran City, Bohol said there are countless others like him with dreams that go beyond the circumstances.
 
“I have also experienced failure many times, but I never gave up. It’s time for all of us to wake up, join hands, and work together towards a brighter future,” he emphasized.
 
Jumamoy, who finished Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering, likewise emphasized to members of Magigiting na may Dangal at Simbolo ng Kawal ng Karagatan (MADASIKLAN) Class of 2023 the importance of PMMA’s three core values namely righteousness, humility, and valiance.
 
“To my fellow graduates of MADASIKLAN  class, let us never forget the three core values that have shaped us into the individuals that we are today. Let us also lead by example, inspiring those around us to strive for greatness and embody the virtues that define our institution,” he said.
 
Meanwhile, Julita Basbas Jumamoy said she is proud of her son’s achievement.
 
“Masaya at proud ako sa kaniya. Kasi nakamit [niya] ‘yung pangarap niya, noong umpisa talaga ‘yan talaga ‘yung pangarap niya na sana makuha niya ang pagiging valedictorian kasi nag-graduate din ‘yan ng class valedictorian ng elementary at naging [with] high honors ng high school,” she recalled.
 
About 97 cadets received their degrees in Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation while 127 cadets accepted their degree in Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering during Thursday’s 200th Commencement Exercises.
 
PMMA is the pioneer institution in maritime education in the country, and is supported by government funds with the assistance from the shipping industry. 

It has produced many master mariners, chief engineers, shipping executives, naval and coast guard officers, excellent educators and trainers now serving in marine and maritime-related industries in the country and abroad. (By Reia G. Pabelonia with Rick P. Quiambao-PIA 3)
