Bishop warns against entitlement in priesthood at Chrism Mass

BULACAN– A Catholic bishop in central Luzon used a key Holy Week liturgy to caution priests against entitlement and a desire for recognition.

In a homily during the Chrism Mass on Holy Tuesday at the Malolos Cathedral, Bishop Dennis Villarojo warned that viewing priesthood as a privilege can devolve into entitlement, which in turn creates expectations and eventual disappointment.

“What is supposed to be a privilege can become a sense of entitlement. Entitlement begets expectations; failed expectations beget disappointment,” Villarojo said.

He said the pursuit of appreciation can weaken the spiritual foundation of ministry, particularly its link to the Eucharist, and turn pastoral work into a burden rather than a source of joy.

The bishop also reminded the clergy that priestly service is not earned but given.

“We are the ones who give thanks because we have been chosen to serve,” he said, underscoring that priestly service flows from God’s grace, not from personal merit.

Villarojo also emphasized that priesthood is a participation in Christ’s mission, not simply a role of service, describing it as “the perpetuation of Christ’s work.”

Using vivid imagery, he urged priests to embody compassion in action.

“These hands are meant for blessing… for lifting those who have fallen,” he said.

Villarojo added that priests should not seek gratitude from others, saying it is sufficient that they are instruments of sharing God’s love. (CBCP News)
