MANILA — The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFOMS) strongly condemned the killing of broadcaster Julito “Jaz” Diamante Calo in La Castellana, Negros Occidental on March 20, describing the incident as a grave threat to press freedom and journalist safety in the country.
PTFOMS Executive Director Jose Torres Jr. extended condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of Calo, emphasizing the risks faced by media practitioners in the line of duty.
Calo, a broadcaster based in Negros Occidental, was known for hosting the radio program “Waswasanay sa Quinto Distrito” on 88.3 DNN News FM in Himamaylan City. He also served as a job order worker in the local government.
“The loss of Mr. Calo is a stark reminder of the dangers confronting journalists. We stand in solidarity with the media community in condemning this senseless act,” Torres said.
The Task Force assured the public that it is fully committed to ensuring justice for the slain broadcaster. Coordination with local law enforcement agencies is already underway to prioritize and expedite the investigation.
Initial police reports revealed that Calo was standing in front of his residence near the roadside when a white SUV approached from the direction of La Carlota City. An assailant from the vehicle shot him before fleeing toward the town center of La Castellana.
PTFOMS stressed that safeguarding press freedom is a shared responsibility and called on media organizations, civil society groups, and the public to unite in defending journalists’ rights and ensuring their protection.
The agency also urged anyone with information related to the incident to come forward and assist authorities in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
