ZAMBALES– The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) bolstered the country’s maritime defense capabilities with the simultaneous christening and commissioning of two new naval assets on February 24 at the Naval Operating Base in Subic, Zambales.
The ceremony formally welcomed the offshore patrol vessel BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS-20) and the fast attack interdiction craft BRP Audrey Bañares (PG-910) into active service. The event was led by Romeo S Brawner Jr, Chief of Staff of the AFP, alongside Jose Ma Ambrosio Ezpeleta, Flag Officer in Command of the Philippine Navy. Senior military officials and distinguished guests also attended the milestone occasion.
Named after Rajah Sulayman, the pre-Hispanic leader who commanded Tagalog forces during the 1570 Battle of Manila, BRP Rajah Sulayman (PS-20) symbolizes courage, leadership, and the enduring spirit of Filipino resistance. The offshore patrol vessel is expected to enhance the Navy’s ability to conduct sustained maritime patrols and safeguard the country’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zone.
Meanwhile, BRP Audrey Bañares (PG-910) pays tribute to Jose Audrey Bañares, a Navy commando who was killed in action off Zamboanga City in September 2013 following a sea battle with Moro National Liberation Front extremists. The fast attack interdiction craft stands as a symbol of bravery and dedication among Filipino sailors defending national sovereignty.

In his keynote address, General Brawner emphasized that the AFP’s modernization program is firmly grounded in responsibility and the pursuit of peace.
“Let me be clear: modernization is not a signal of aggression. It is a statement of responsibility. A credible defense posture deters conflict. Preparedness prevents miscalculation. Capability preserves peace,” Brawner said.
With the addition of these vessels to the fleet, the AFP strengthens its presence in both littoral and deep-sea operations, reinforcing its commitment to protecting the nation’s vast archipelagic waters, coastlines, and economic zones while honoring the legacy of its defenders.
