AURORA – The five-day Training Course on the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS) officially opened this morning, led by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), strengthening Aurora Province’s readiness against the potential impacts of strong earthquakes. The activity is being held at the 2nd Floor of the Emergency Operations Center, PDRRMO New Building in Barangay Suklayin, Baler.
Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Engr. Amado Elson A. Egargue highlighted in his welcome remarks the vital role of the REDAS training in enhancing the capacity of local personnel to swiftly and accurately assess earthquake-induced damage. He emphasized that the training was made possible through the funding and full support of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office under the leadership of Governor Isidro “Sid” P. Galban.
“The unwavering advocacy of our Governor for disaster preparedness and community resilience continues to guide our programs and initiatives,” Engr. Egargue said, as he expressed gratitude to PHIVOLCS for its consistent efforts in advancing disaster safety and readiness.
He also acknowledged PHIVOLCS Director Teresito Bacolcol, Dr. Leyo, Bart Bautista, and the entire technical support team for their crucial contributions in preparing and organizing the training.
According to Engr. Egargue, REDAS is a critical system that enables rapid, accurate, and efficient assessment of earthquake-related damage—an essential capability for a province like Aurora, which is highly exposed to seismic hazards.
“Strengthening our technical readiness is not just a necessity—it is our responsibility to safeguard the lives, communities, and future of every Auroreno,” he stressed.
He likewise commended the 56 participants from various government agencies in Aurora for their commitment to learning and their readiness to fulfill their roles in disaster risk reduction and management. The skills and knowledge they are expected to gain within the five-day training will significantly enhance the province’s capacity in earthquake preparedness, response, and recovery.
The REDAS training will run from December 2 to 6, 2025, and is expected to deliver meaningful, practical, and impactful learning to all participants. (Jason de Asis)
