AURORA — A total of 277 individuals from Aurora, including employees of the Aurora Pacific Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (APECO), have completed a month-long Computer Literacy Program, strengthening the province’s bid to build a digitally skilled workforce for future industries.
The training, conducted in partnership with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and the Fil-Chi Love and Care Foundation Inc., provided participants with hands-on knowledge in computer operations, internet use, word processing, troubleshooting, and digital communication. Organizers emphasized that such skills are now indispensable as industries rapidly shift toward digitalization.
APECO President and CEO Atty. Gil G. Taway IV said the initiative is part of the agency’s broader vision to prepare host communities such as Casiguran, Dinalungan, and the Dicadi area to meet the demands of potential investors.
“Progress is only possible when we have a ready and competent workforce,” Taway stressed. “By equipping our local communities with essential digital skills, we are not only enhancing their employability but also empowering them to contribute meaningfully to the ecozone’s growth.”
Of the total graduates, 35 were APECO employees, reflecting the agency’s commitment to upskilling its own personnel under what Taway describes as his “Big Brother Leadership” approach—where both communities and the organization itself grow together.
The program’s success was bolstered by the Fil-Chi Foundation’s donation of 40 laptops and 20 desktops, which allowed learners to undergo practical exercises. TESDA trainers, supported by a dedicated technical team, facilitated the sessions with APECO providing accommodations, logistical support, and the venue.
The Fil-Chi Foundation has already trained over 45,000 graduates across Luzon, aligning with Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy to strengthen ties with neighboring countries, including the Philippines.
Looking ahead, APECO is pursuing expanded partnerships with TESDA to enhance technical skills training and is also exploring deeper collaborations with Taiwanese companies, in coordination with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO).
Taway expressed optimism that these initiatives will not only attract locators and investors but also ensure that Aurora’s workforce is future-ready in a competitive, technology-driven economy. (Jason de Asis)
