PH, Japan, U.S. Strengthen Maritime Ties Through 11th West Philippine Sea Drills

ZAMBALES,— The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), together with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM), reaffirmed their commitment to multilateral maritime cooperation with the successful completion of the 11th Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA) in the West Philippine Sea on September 12–13, 2025.

The joint exercises, held in the waters between Magalawa Island in Palauig and Silanguin Island in San Antonio, Zambales, mark the second MMCA conducted this month, underscoring the sustained partnership of the three nations in advancing maritime security and promoting a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific.

The AFP showcased its naval and air capabilities with the deployment of BRP Jose Rizal (FF150), an AW109 anti-submarine helicopter, a Philippine Air Force C-208B Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft, a search and rescue plane, and four FA-50 fighter jets. Their U.S. counterparts contributed the USS John Finn (DDG113), a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, and two MH 60-R helicopters, while Japan deployed its amphibious vessel JS Osumi (LST4001), highlighting its readiness for combined operations.

Throughout the two-day activity, the three nations conducted a wide array of interoperability exercises, including anti-submarine warfare, naval surface interdiction, cross-deck landings, search and rescue operations, and coordinated tactical maneuvers. These drills aimed to boost communication, enhance maritime domain awareness, and refine response strategies in joint maritime operations.

Military officials emphasized that the continued success of the MMCA reflects the Philippines’ strong resolve to safeguard its sovereign rights while strengthening alliances that foster peace, security, and stability in contested waters.

“This engagement demonstrates not only our operational readiness but also our shared commitment to freedom of navigation and collective security,” the AFP said in a statement.

The trilateral exercises come at a critical time amid growing tensions in the West Philippine Sea, reinforcing the message that regional security is best achieved through cooperation and adherence to international law. (Jason de Asis)
