PH Navy commemorates 9th Anniversary of 2016 Arbitral Award, vows stronger defense of maritime sovereignty

MANILA – The Philippine Navy marks the 9th anniversary of the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea, with naval assets across the country simultaneously sounding their horns on July 12, 2025.

The blowing of ships’ horns, also called a “siren salute,” is a naval tradition that symbolizes unity, tribute, and continuity. Sounding the horns together marks important maritime events, honors historic milestones, and reminds coastal communities of the commitment to protect the nation’s seas and uphold maritime heritage.

“The symbolic act also echoes the Navy’s resolve to defend what is rightfully Filipino, as enshrined in the 2016 Arbitral Award and the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). Guided by the Arbitral Award, the Philippine Navy continues to strengthen its capabilities, sharpen its maritime posture, and deepen cooperation with like-minded nations that respect international law,” said in an earlier statement from the Philippine Navy sent to media.

“On this historic day, we sound our horns as one, a clear signal that the Philippine Navy stands firm in defending what is rightfully ours. The commemoration of the 2016 Arbitral Award strengthens our resolve to defend our seas, protect our sovereignty, and secure our nation’s future”, said PN Flag Officer in Command Vice Admiral Jose Ma Ambrosio Q Ezpeleta.

“Nine years since the ruling, we remain steadfast in our mandate to safeguard our maritime domain and uphold a rules-based international order anchored on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea,” added Ezpeleta.

The Philippine Navy also honors the courage of every sailor and marine who keeps watch over the country’s waters, as today serves as a reminder to the world that the Navy will always stand ready to defend our rightful place in our seas.
