DICT distributes Bayanihan SIM cards to remote school in Zambales

ZAMBALES—In line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s directive to expand internet access nationwide, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) and Smart Communications distributed Bayanihan SIM cards to students and teachers of Coto High School in Masinloc, Zambales.

Each SIM card provides 25 gigabytes of free data per month, valid for one year, enabling access to online learning platforms and educational resources.

DICT Assistant Secretary Philip Varilla said the Bayanihan SIM initiative is implemented in cooperation with the Department of Education and Department of the Interior and Local Government aiming to deliver free internet connectivity to geographically isolated and disadvantaged (GIDA) schools.

“The goal of the Bayanihan SIM is simple but meaningful — to provide free internet access to teachers and students, especially in remote areas. This program is different from previous DICT initiatives because it is focused specifically on the education sector and targets schools that have limited or no internet access. We call it ‘Bayanihan’ because we are building the digital future for our youth together,” he explained.

Coto High School was chosen based on criteria set by DICT, prioritizing schools in GIDA areas with limited connectivity and a high number of students and teachers affected by the digital divide.

DICT ensures program sustainability through technical support and ongoing coordination with telecom partners and local government units.

The initial rollout in Zambales benefits about 500 students and teachers, with plans to expand the Bayanihan SIM initiative to more remote schools across the country.

In addition, DICT continues to implement complementary programs such as Free Wi-Fi for All and digital literacy training for teachers, students, and communities.

The Bayanihan SIM is expected to improve students’ access to online classes and research materials and enhance communication and lesson planning for teachers, particularly in underserved regions. (Reia G. Pabelonia – PIA)
