DND urges all Filipinos to honor heroism of war veterans

The Department of National Defense (DND), together with the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), announced the commemoration activities for the 83rd “Araw ng Kagitingan” and 2025 Philippine Veterans Week on April 5 to 11 to celebrate the heroism of the Filipinos troops during World War II.

In a statement, DND Assistant Secretary for Defense Communications Arsenio Andolong invited all Filipinos to take part in the activities that honor the bravery and sacrifice made by the veterans.

“Our veterans’ courage and sacrifice laid the foundation for the freedoms we enjoy today. It is our duty to honor them, not just through ceremonies but through our actions. The DND encourages every Filipino to take part in these commemorative events, learn from our history, and carry forward the spirit of patriotism and service,” he added.

This year’s observance carries the theme, “Kabayanihan ng Beterano: Sandigan ng Kaunlaran ng Bagong Pilipinas,” and highlights the enduring legacy of Filipino veterans in nation-building.

Andolong said many of the lined up events are free and open to the public.

The commemoration begins on April 5 with a Sunrise Ceremony at 6 a.m. at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at 7 a.m. and the Review in Honor of the Veterans at 9 a.m. at Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

The 83rd “Araw ng Kagitingan” commemoration on April 9 at Mount Samat National Shrine in Pilar, Bataan, will be led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., featuring a wreath-laying ceremony at the Dambana ng Kagitingan to honor Filipino and American World War II veterans.

This event will have limited capacity, but PVAO will provide a live broadcast for public viewing.

On April 10, the Joint Tribute to All Filipino Heroes & Paggunita sa Capas will take place at 7:30 a.m. at the Capas National Shrine in Tarlac, followed by the Sunset Ceremony at 4 p.m. on April 11 at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, which will include a eucharistic celebration and a reflection program.

Apart from these main events, the Faces of Valor Historical Exhibit will be on display at the University of Santo Tomas from April 21 to 30.

Throughout Philippine Veterans Week, veterans may also avail of free Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) rides, with details to be announced by the Department of Transportation.

“Let us honor our heroes and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten,” Andolong said. (PNA)
