May 3 is World Press Freedom Day.

Today is World Press Freedom Day. The United Nations General Assembly declared May 3 to be World Press Freedom Day or World Press Day. It aims to observe and raise awareness to the importance of freedom of the press and remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold that right as enshrined under Article 19 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Freedom of expression is an important human right, which is essential for a society to be democratic. It enables the free exchange of ideas, opinions and information and thus allows members of society to form their own opinions on issues of public importance.
